CONTRACT

 

Under the general direction of the Vice President of Academic Affairs, the Director of Nursing provides the vision, direction, and oversight required to build, maintain and expand exemplary partnerships and programs to ensure a highly trained and professional workforce for health care providers. The position will work closely with health care providers, regulatory agencies, accrediting bodies, professional groups and funding agencies to keep instruction, technology and standards of practice up to date in current programs and to build new programs as appropriate for the area. The position models leadership, sensitivity and passionate commitment to the education and health care needs of the socioeconomically and culturally diverse populations in Siskiyou County. The position is fully responsible for all nursing programs and partnerships and provides leadership for the development and oversight of the faculty, staff, facilities, budget, policies and procedures for those programs.

MANAGE NURSING PROGRAMS

  • Interpret nursing program requirements and objectives to administration and other college departments.
  • Develop annual department goals and objectives.
  • Oversee systematic program evaluation.
  • Participate in policy/procedure development.
  • Provide information required by accrediting agencies to clinical facilities.
  • Assess and maintain compliance with applicable laws, regulations, policies and other requirements.
  • Maintain currency of regional clinical agency requirements.
  • Maintain currency with local, state and federal regulations.
  • Complete required reports and approve forms for Board of Nursing and other constituents.
  • Oversee and coordinate self-study reports.
  • Coordinate Nursing Advisory Committee meetings.
  • Hold regular faculty meetings.
  • Coordinate nursing program handbook update sessions.

 

MANAGE NURSING ENROLLMENT & STUDENTS

  • Recruit students and potential applicants.
  • Manage admissions and candidate selection process.
  • Coordinate new student orientation.
  • Oversee retention strategies.
  • Develop course and clinical schedules.
  • Maintain student contact and provide student advisement.
  • Refer students to appropriate student services.
  • Support safe and reasonable accommodations.
  • Investigate and resolve student issues and refer student complaints as necessary.
  • Administer student disciplinary process.
  • Oversee student ceremonies.
  • Coordinate revision and update nursing program sections of course catalog and website.

 

MANAGE NURSING CURRICULUM

  • Participate in identification and validation of prerequisites.
  • Participate in curriculum development.
  • Orchestrate approvals of curriculum change with Curriculum Committee, BRN, Chancellor’s Office, etc.
  • Monitor faculty adherence to established curriculum, assessment methods, schedules and related policies and procedures.
  • Facilitate incorporation of current educational strategies and technology into curriculum.
  • Monitor faculty adherence to approved textbook list.
  • Facilitates the development of articulation pathways with relevant educational institutions.

 

MANAGE HUMAN RESOURCES

  • Direct Assistant Nursing Director in administration of program.
  • Provide leadership and assist with the recruitment of faculty and staff.
  • Supervise, evaluate and participate in disciplinary actions for faculty and staff.
  • Facilitate and encourage on-going professional development of faculty and staff.
  • Investigate personnel issues and refer as necessary.
  • Participates in management of Rural Health Sciences Institute (RHSI).
  • Develop schedule and assign teaching assignments.
  • Ensure faculty licensure and certification.
  • Ensure appropriate faculty orientation consistent with assignments.

 

MANAGE FISCAL RESOURCES

  • Advocate for necessary program funding.
  • Develop and administer annual and long-range budgets, grants and inventory.
  • Review, evaluate, authorize and monitor department budget requests and expenditures.
  • Explore grant opportunities and assist with the development of proposals.  Administer and manage external funding per grant requirements.

 

MANAGE FACILITY RESOURCES

  • Develop, manage, and maintain relationships and contractual agreements with clinical affiliates.
  • Manage use of clinical sites.
  • Obtain and maintain equipment and supplies currently used in industry.
  • Supervise simulation and skills laboratories including personnel, inventory, and supplies.

 

COLLABORATE WITH COLLEGE/DISTRICT

  • Represent and advocate for nursing department needs.
  • Follow established protocol for college communication and approvals.
  • Adhere to, and participate in development of campus/district policies and procedures.
  • Actively participate in college events.
  • Participate in college and administrative committees.

 

PROMOTE COMMUNITY AWARENESS & PUBLIC RELATIONS

  • Advocate for improvement of nursing education.
  • Represent college/district on boards and committees at local, regional, state and national levels.
  • Publicize program activities and accomplishments.
  • Participate in marketing and outreach activities.
  • Develop continuing education programs in response to community needs.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with local employers, agencies, and other community organizations for purpose of serving workforce training needs and identifying KSAs required by graduates.

 

1.   Qualified for Board of Registered Nursing (BRN) and Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians (BVNPT) approval and as Nursing Program Director:

  • Clear and active California license as a Registered Nurse, or the ability to obtain one.  By the time of interview, must have proof of application for California license;
  • Master’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university which includes course work in nursing, education or administration;
  • One year’s experience in an administrative position which includes administrative responsibility in a registered nursing education program, or registered nurse administrator of a hospital professional nursing education services program. 
  • Have completed a course or courses offered by an approved school with instruction in administration, teaching, and curriculum development.
  • Two years’ experience teaching in pre-or post-licensure registered nursing program;
  • Three years’ experience as a registered nurse or a combination of direct care, nursing administration or nursing education within the last five years, with at least one year’s full time equivalent in direct care; OR
  • Equivalent experience and/or education, as determined for approval by the California BRN and BVNPT

2.   Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

Desired Qualifications:

  1. A Ph.D. or DNP from an accredited university in nursing, education or related field.
  2. Administrative experience at the community college level.
  3. Commitment to community college education as demonstrated in personal and/or professional experience.
  4. Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, students, other on-campus groups, off-campus community groups and educational partners.
  5. Ability to communicate clearly with students and staff, both orally and in writing.
  6. Evidence of successful experiences leading in a cooperative environment in higher education and demonstrating good judgments, setting appropriate priorities and evaluating the effectiveness of decision, plans, programs and employees.

 

Licenses and Requirements:

  • Valid California driver’s license
  • Valid and clear California Registered Nurse license
  • Regular Attendance

 

Knowlege and Skills:

  • In depth understanding of concepts listed under minimum qualifications.
  • Ability to exercise knowledge to perform all duties listed under key responsibilities. 
  • Ability to operate computers and programs applied in office functions and emails.
  • Good to excellent interpersonal communication skills.
  • Supervision of faculty and staff.
  • Interaction with students and community partners. 
  • Knowledge of regulations and policies within the Board of Registered Nursing, Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians and Department of Public Health Training and Program requirements.
  • Knowledge of current nursing practices.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain clinical sites and community partners.

Selection Process:

After the preliminary screening, selected candidates will be invited to the campus for an initial interview with the Search Committee. Videoconference interviews (in lieu of an in-person initial interview) will be offered. Candidates to be interviewed will be selected from applicants who most closely meet the minimum and desired qualifications. Meeting the minimum qualifications does not guarantee an interview. The Search Committee will recommend finalists to the Superintendent/President for a final interview.
